Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine

Longleaf Southern Yellow Pine was the flooring of southern plantations. In the 19th century, it was transported by rail as structural beams to build northern factories and southern mills during the Industrial Revolution, and continued in its structuraul capacity until the advent of the steel girder. These old forest pines grew straight and tall, with widths up to 3 feet and could live more that 500 years. The species, commonly known as Heart Pine for its dense heartwood, was so desirable that it was logged to near extinction by 1910. Heart Pine’s hardness rivals that of Red Oak, and its rediscovery makes it as desirable today as it’s ever been for flooring and timber framed structures.

Vertical Grain Heart Pine is known for dense, straight grain with few knots and nail holes, and is very much at home in a variety of settings.

Janka Hardness Rating: 1225
